SuikoBot

SuikoBot is the robot of Suiko, a service that keeps the published pages of a website up to date with verified facts. If you found this page from your server logs, a website owner who uses Suiko asked it to read pages of that site.

How it identifies itself

User agent: SuikoBot/1.0 (+https://getsuiko.com/bot/), sometimes followed by a contact address.

What it reads

The sitemap of the site (declared in robots.txt or at the usual addresses) and the pages that the site owner has chosen to update in Suiko. It reads a page the way a visitor does, to extract its text and its facts. It does not crawl the whole site, does not follow links from one page to another, and does not read forms, logged-in areas or files other than HTML and sitemaps.

At what pace

One request at a time, with a short pause between two pages, and a few pages per site at most on any given day. It never retries a failing page in a loop.

What it never does

It does not collect email addresses or personal data, does not train any model on your pages, does not index your site for search, and does not resell what it reads. What it reads serves only the account that asked for it.

How to block it

SuikoBot respects robots.txt. To keep it away from part of your site, or all of it:

User-agent: SuikoBot
Disallow: /

A page it is not allowed to read is skipped, and the Suiko user is told that the site blocks the robot. The rules of the * group apply when no SuikoBot group exists.

How Suiko dates a page

To rank the pages of a site worth updating, Suiko needs to know how old each page is. It looks, in this order, at: the modification date given by your CMS when it is connected (the surest), dateModified in the page’s structured data (JSON-LD), the article:modified_time or og:updated_time meta tags, a<time> element marked as an update, a visible “Updated on …” date in the text, the <lastmod> of your sitemap (only when it differs from page to page), and the HTTP Last-Modified header (only when it is not simply the current time). It also notes the most recent year the page speaks of: a page touched yesterday that still quotes 2022 prices is treated as old.

If no date is found for your pages, the quickest fixes are: connect your CMS to Suiko, add dateModified to your JSON-LD, or publish a sitemap with a true lastmod per page.
