Surfer SEO alternatives: nine content tools compared in 2026

By Adrien Asselineau · · 12 min read

Surfer sells seats and documents: 1 seat and 10 documents for €59 per month, 10 seats and unlimited documents for €359. The nine alternatives below go from $23 per month to on-request plans. Semrush and SE Ranking sell their content editor inside an SEO suite; Frase, Scalenut and NeuronWriter write the article for you; Clearscope and MarketMuse plan and grade; Suiko guides human writers with verified facts. We found an approval workflow in only two tools, Frase and Suiko, and a fact-check against your own sources in one, Suiko. Every price and feature was read on the official sites on 16, 17 and 19 October 2026, with an independent second reading; the sources are listed at the end.

Surfer SEO is the tool most content teams name first when they think of on-page optimisation. Born in Wrocław in 2017 and part of the Positive group (formerly Sarbacane) since October 2025, it describes itself as “Your AI Search Visibility OS”: a Content Editor with a real-time Content Score, generated outlines, an audit of existing pages refreshed “with only two clicks”, WordPress publishing, and an AI Tracker for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. Its price is built on seats and documents: on monthly billing, €59 for 1 seat and 10 documents (Discovery), €119 for 3 seats and 30 documents (Standard), €219 for 5 seats and 30 documents (Pro), €359 for 10 seats and unlimited documents under a fair usage policy (Peace of Mind); about 17% less when billed yearly. The 7-day trial runs on the Pro plan, asks for billing details and switches to the chosen plan when it ends.

That pricing model, the AI-written drafts, and the absence of an approval workflow or a fact-check against your own sources are the three reasons teams give for looking elsewhere. This article compares nine alternatives on verifiable criteria: public price, languages, brief, score, review, updating existing content, publishing to the CMS, fact-checking, visibility in AI answers. All the facts come from the official sites, consulted on 16, 17 and 19 October 2026, and the sources are listed at the end. One thing before we start: I publish Suiko, which is on this list. I applied the same criteria to Suiko as to the others.

What to compare

The tools in this category do not all do the same job. Some grade a text against the pages ranking for a query and suggest terms. Some write the whole article. Some run the chain from brief to publishing, with roles, statuses and result tracking. Since late 2025, most add a “GEO” layer, meaning the measurement of your brand's presence in the answers of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews, often as a separate paid product.

Seven questions are enough to rule out half the candidates.

  • What does the price count: seats, documents, articles, or nothing?
  • Is your language supported for the analysis, not only for the interface?
  • Is there a brief before writing, and a score during?
  • Are review and approval inside the tool, with roles?
  • Can the tool rework content already online, and how?
  • Does it publish to your CMS, or do you copy and paste?
  • Does it check facts, and against what? A dated, sourced knowledge base, or nothing?

The comparison table

Entry prices excluding VAT, as shown on the pricing pages on 16, 17 and 19 October 2026. Surfer, Semrush and SE Ranking showed their prices in euros from Western Europe; Clearscope, Frase, NeuronWriter, Dashword and Scalenut in dollars. “On request” means no price is shown. Entry prices do not cover the same scope from one tool to the next (seats, documents or articles included): the sheet in each section spells it out.

The minimum plan for your team

The entry price does not tell you what you will pay. Enter the number of people who will use the tool and the number of contents you produce or update each month: the table gives, for each tool, the cheapest public plan that covers that need, extra seats and units included when the vendor shows their price. We count one content for one unit of each vendor: a document at Surfer, an SEO-boosted article at Semrush, an article at SE Ranking, Scalenut and Frase, a draft at Clearscope, an analysis at NeuronWriter, a report at Dashword. Prices stay in the vendor's currency, excluding VAT.

What the pricing pages do not say

  • Surfer SEO monthly-billing quotas. On annual billing, Surfer grants 120 or 360 documents for the year, reset once a year. Prices shown in euros; no extra seat or document in the catalogue.
  • Semrush Content Toolkit one plan, same price on monthly and annual billing (€57.54, shown in euros from Portugal). Standard article generations are capped at 10,000 per month (the help centre says unlimited); the counted unit is the SEO-boosted article, 5 per month, plus 10 for $30 per month. Included seats are not shown: we count one; an additional user costs €19.18 per month.
  • SE Ranking the content editor is included in the SEO suite plans. The comparison table does not state the period of the 25 and 50 articles: we read them as monthly. Extra articles are priced “from €39.20” without a stated quantity, so we do not compute an overage. Extra manager seat from €14.40 per month.
  • Scalenut prices in “$” without a currency code. On 19 October 2026 the annual prices were a “60% off” promotion with doubled quotas; we keep the standard quotas and show the promotional annual price as displayed. Starter shows no seat count: we count one. Extra seat price not published.
  • Clearscope unlimited users, so the number of users changes nothing. Both plans include 20 drafts per month; additional drafts exist as an add-on, at a tiered price the page does not spell out. Annual price not shown.
  • Frase per-article overage ($5 on Professional, $4 on Scale) is an option to switch on; the Starter plan accepts neither extra seats nor overage. Extra seat $29 per month.
  • NeuronWriter Bronze and Silver share content read-only: we count one user. Gold and above, unlimited members. The page does not state the period of the analyses: we read them as monthly.
  • Dashword annual price not shown (20% discount announced, on request). Business is announced “from $349”.
  • Suiko unlimited users in both tiers; the figure counted is the number of new contents per month, all languages combined. Price excluding VAT, the same on annual billing; beyond three languages, on request.

Semrush Content Toolkit

Vendor
Semrush Inc., Boston (an Adobe company)
Entry price
€57.54 per month, same on annual billing
Languages
7 languages, list not published
CMS publishing
WordPress plugin; Google Docs
AI visibility
AI Search Optimizer included; AI Visibility Toolkit sold separately at $99 per month

Semrush, founded in 2008 and headquartered in Boston, became an Adobe company on 28 April 2026. Its content product is now called Content Toolkit (the ContentShake name no longer appears on the site) and is sold on its own, apart from the SEO suite: one plan, Base, at €57.54 per month, the same price on monthly and annual billing. It bundles an SEO Brief Generator built from live search results, an AI Article Generator, a Content Optimizer with a single Content Score that “factors in both organic SEO and AI visibility”, up to 50 brand voices, and one-click publishing to WordPress or Google Docs. The plan counts 5 SEO-boosted articles per month (10 more for $30 per month); standard article generations are capped at 10,000. The plan lists “Languages: 7” without naming them; the older SEO Writing Assistant “currently works best with English”. Included seats are not shown; an additional user is €19.18 per month. The 7-day trial takes a card and charges the plan when it ends.

Review is limited to a “Viewer” access on briefs and articles; we did not find an approval workflow, a fact-check or a client knowledge base: the AI “creates new text based on Semrush data and your input”, and the help centre advises to “add human review before publishing”. Tracking your brand in AI answers is a separate product, the AI Visibility Toolkit, at $99 per month without a trial, which follows ChatGPT Search, Google's AI Mode and Gemini.

In short: the cheapest way to add an AI writer and a content score next to the Semrush suite, for a small team that reviews the facts itself.

SE Ranking

Vendor
SER Acquisition Inc. (Wilmington) and Seranking Ltd (London)
Entry price
€87.20 per month billed yearly, €109 monthly (Core)
Languages
Eight languages for the editor; one-click generation in English only
CMS publishing
WordPress via API (create or update a post) or WXR export
AI visibility
AI Search Toolkit: AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini

SE Ranking has existed since 2013, with legal entities in London and Wilmington and teams in Kyiv, Wrocław and Warsaw. Its Content Editor and AI Writer are included in the SEO suite plans according to the pricing page (the help centre still lists Content Marketing as an add-on): Core at €109 per month (€87.20 billed yearly) with 1 manager seat and 25 articles, Growth at €235 (€188) with 3 seats and 50 articles, Enterprise on request; extra seats from €14.40, extra articles “from €39.20”, a 14-day trial without a card. The brief is detailed (competitors, terms with an importance score, People Also Ask questions, structure, metadata, notes for the writer) and the editor shows a Content Score, a Brief Progress bar, a Flesch readability score and a Quality tab. The editor fully supports eight languages, English, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Russian, Portuguese and Spanish; one-click article generation is “limited to the English language”, on GPT-4o according to the product page.

Publishing goes to WordPress through the API, creating a new post or updating an existing one, or through a WXR export; no other CMS is named. Existing content can be imported by URL and rechecked, with Search Console data per article, but there is no dedicated refresh feature: the product page only suggests asking the AI to rephrase or expand the text. Collaboration goes through share links, notes for the copywriter and ten saved versions; we did not find an approval workflow with roles, nor a fact-check: the FAQ leaves “fact checking, and editing” to the human. AI visibility is covered by the AI Search Toolkit, which tracks AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, with prompts included in the plans.

In short: the most complete editor inside an SEO suite, in eight languages, if you already want the suite.

Scalenut

Vendor
Scalenut Technologies, Gurugram, India
Entry price
$59 per month (a 60% off annual promotion was displayed)
Languages
Not published; English variants only
CMS publishing
WordPress and Shopify
AI visibility
AI Visibility sold separately from $49 per month: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews; Perplexity and Claude on Pro

Scalenut, from Gurugram in India, now presents itself as “Human experts. AI Agents. Make you win the AI Search.” Its Cruise Mode takes an article from context and title to outline, first draft and editor, with a Content Score (called “GEO Score” on the marketing pages) that checks key terms, headings, schema markup and meta tags. Prices on monthly billing: Starter $59 (5 articles per month), Plus $89 (30 articles, 4 team members), Professional $199 (75 articles, unlimited members). On 19 October 2026 the annual prices were shown as a “60% off” promotion with doubled quotas, $24, $36 and $80; the standard annual price is not shown. The 7-day trial is announced; whether a card is required is not stated, and there is no refund after the trial.

It publishes natively to WordPress and Shopify, audits existing pages with Search Console data and refreshes them in one click. We did not find a list of supported languages beyond English variants, an approval workflow with roles, or a fact-check: the marketing promises “factual” content, the plagiarism check runs through Copyscape, and in the VIP service it is a human strategist who verifies the facts. AI visibility is a separate product, from $49 per month, which tracks ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews, and Perplexity and Claude on its Pro tier.

In short: an AI writer with a refresh workflow and WordPress or Shopify publishing, at a promotional price, in English.

Clearscope

Vendor
Mushi Labs, Austin
Entry price
$129 per month
Languages
Five languages, French included
CMS publishing
WordPress plugin, Google Docs, Word
AI visibility
Query Tracking: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude

Clearscope, in Austin, is the reference tool of American teams for topical coverage. Its 2.0 version of October 2025 repositioned it as a “Discoverability Platform”: “Get Discovered on Google, ChatGPT, and What's Next”. It offers a letter-based Content Grade, outlines generated by the Outline Builder and exportable as a brief, a content inventory with “Content Decay” and “Striking Distance” views, tracking of brand mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, and Google Docs, WordPress and Word integrations. It supports five languages, French included.

Prices: Essentials at $129 per month (50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 drafts), Business at $399 (300 queries, 300 pages, account manager), Enterprise custom, with unlimited users and projects on all plans and a 14-day trial. We did not find a brief assigned to a writer or an approval workflow.

In short: the closest to Surfer in spirit, grading rather than writing, with unlimited users and a Google Docs workflow.

Frase

Vendor
Frase, Inc. (Copysmith group)
Entry price
$49 per month, $39 yearly
Languages
Several languages; French in four variants
CMS publishing
WordPress, Webflow, Sanity, Wix
AI visibility
AI Visibility: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini depending on the plan

Frase, a Massachusetts company according to its terms of service, acquired by Copysmith in 2022, was entirely rebuilt in February 2026 around an AI agent: “Rank on Google. Get cited by AI.” The agent researches the topic, writes in the brand's voice, grades the text for Google and for AI engines, then publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix, after your approval in a review queue. Content Guard watches for traffic drops on your pages and prepares a fix. Several languages are supported; French comes in four variants.

Prices in dollars: Starter $49 per month (1 seat, 1 site, 10 articles), Professional $129 (3 seats, 5 sites, 40 articles), Scale $299 (5 seats, 10 domains, 100 articles), 20% less yearly, 7-day trial without a card. The articles are written by the AI; your people review them.

In short: the only alternative with a review queue before publishing, with articles written by AI and the widest CMS list.

NeuronWriter

Vendor
Conti, Zamość (Contadu)
Entry price
$23 per month, $19 yearly
Languages
170 languages, quality varies by language
CMS publishing
WordPress; Shopify and Google Docs via extension
AI visibility
AI Visibility: AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity

NeuronWriter, published in Zamość, Poland, by Conti within the Contadu suite, claims 300,000 to 350,000 users depending on where you look on its home page. It covers NLP optimisation, article generation (GPT-5, Claude Sonnet 4.5, Gemini), a content plan, team task management, export to WordPress and an AI Visibility module that tracks AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity. It announces 170 languages, specifying that the quality of recommendations varies by language.

It is the cheapest of the comparison: from $23 per month (Bronze, 25 analyses) to $117 (Diamond, 150 analyses), with the Gold plan at $69 opening the Search Console, WordPress and Shopify integrations.

In short: an option for a freelancer or a small team, with no brief or review workflow that we found.

MarketMuse and Dashword, with reservations

MarketMuse, a Boston pioneer founded in 2013, has belonged to Siteimprove since October 2024. Its inventory-based planning and its nine types of briefs (all nine only on the Strategy plan) remain well regarded, but its pricing page shows no price, publishing is done by copy and paste, and only English and Spanish are officially supported. Dashword, an Estonian company, now presents itself around AI agents and an MCP server, from $99 per month for 5 seats and 30 content reports; no language is documented and we found no AI visibility tracking.

In short: MarketMuse for planning at enterprise scale on request, Dashword for a small English-speaking team in Google Docs; neither replaces Surfer's editor.

Suiko

Vendor
Adrien Asselineau, Lisbon
Entry price

CMS publishing
Strapi; another CMS connected at onboarding
AI visibility
Google AI Overviews, monthly survey

Suiko is the software I publish. It runs the whole chain for texts written by humans: a brief generated from Google results and from the facts in your knowledge base, an editor with a score out of 100 in five families, including “the facts are right”, a tracking board with review and approval, publishing to Strapi, with another CMS connected at onboarding, and tracking of clicks, impressions, positions and presence in Google AI Overviews for each page produced or updated. Updates of existing content are made by a machine that corrects outdated facts and leaves the rest intact, then reviewed by you.

The content score in Suiko (French interface): five families, including “the facts are right”, checked against the knowledge base.
The content score in Suiko (French interface): five families, including “the facts are right”, checked against the knowledge base.

The price is public: €149 excluding VAT per month on Standard (one site, one language, 30 new contents per month), €299 on Pro (up to three languages, 100 contents), unlimited users, no commitment; onboarding €1,500 once, waived with an annual commitment; updates through prepaid packs of 10 to 300 pages, from €249 to €2,490. What Suiko does not do: generate articles. It is not self-service either: onboarding is done with me.

In short: for teams that value human writing and whose content carries figures, rules or dates that go out of date.

How to choose

If you are leaving Surfer because of the seats, Clearscope and Suiko do not count users; Scalenut's Professional plan and NeuronWriter's Gold plan and above do not either. If you are leaving because of the document quota, look at what each tool counts: Semrush counts only SEO-boosted articles, SE Ranking and Frase count articles, Suiko counts new contents, and the calculator above does the sum for your team.

If you want the AI to write, Frase, Scalenut, NeuronWriter and Semrush do it, and Frase adds a review queue. If you want humans to write and the tool to guide and check them, Suiko is the only one on this list built that way, with the facts checked against your own dated, sourced knowledge base. If your content is regulatory or figure-heavy, ask every vendor what the facts are checked against, and by whom.

Finally, test on your own queries, in your own language. Most demos run in English, and the quality of recommendations changes from one language to another: SE Ranking names eight languages, Clearscope five, Suiko six, Scalenut none. To see the brief Suiko produces, the SEO brief generator is free to use.

Frequently asked questions

Why look for an alternative to Surfer SEO?
Three reasons come up most often. The price is built on seats and documents (1 seat and 10 documents at entry level, 10 seats and unlimited documents at €359 per month), which grows fast with a team. The articles are written or rewritten by AI, which some teams do not want. And we did not find an approval workflow or a check of the facts against your own sources: the Content Score measures coverage and structure, not whether a price or a rule is right.
Which alternatives write the article for you?
Frase, Scalenut, NeuronWriter and Semrush Content Toolkit generate full articles from a brief or an outline; SE Ranking generates in English only. Clearscope and MarketMuse grade and plan rather than write. Suiko does not generate articles: it prepares the brief, guides a human writer with a score and checks the facts against your knowledge base.
Which tools check the facts in a text?
Among the nine, only Suiko claims a fact-check against a knowledge base of your own facts, each dated and sourced, run automatically when a draft is sent for review. Semrush and SE Ranking recommend human review and fact-checking before publishing; Scalenut only promises “factual” content and offers a plagiarism check through Copyscape. We did not find a fact-checking feature in the others.
What is the cheapest option for a team of five people?
It depends on how much you produce. Enter five users and your monthly volume in the calculator above: the tools that charge per seat (Surfer, Frase, SE Ranking, Semrush) jump by one tier or add seat fees, while Clearscope and Suiko do not count users. Prices were read on 16, 17 and 19 October 2026 and change often: check them on each vendor's site.

How this article was written
